Laboratory Techniques: Veneers

Veneers are a thin overlay of coloured ceramic material, which can be used to improve the cosmetic appearance of irregular, discoloured, or unsightly teeth. Due to their nature, sometimes only minimal preparation of the tooth is required. Wax models can be used to demonstrate to the patient, what the final restorations might look like, as part of their treatment plan.

Parts of the construction process are shown in the images below:

Layers of porcelain applied by hand.

Porcelain Layering

Layers of porcelain are applied by hand onto a refractory model.

Firing ceramic veneers in furnace.

Ceramic Furnace

This is then fired in a furnace at high temperature.

More porcelain layers are applied.

Further Layering

This process is repeated until the correct aesthetics, and shade, are achieved.

Veneers are hand finished.

Sand Blast

The veneers are shaped and polished. The refractory model is then sand blasted away.

Veneers are polished and etched ready for bonding.

Finish

The veneers are then acid etched, in preparation for bonding to the patients teeth.
