Laboratory Techniques: Impressions

Standard techniques: Refer to 3M/ESPE or Coltene Whaledent web sites.

Open tray technique. This allows the dentist to remove the impression, complete with its inset copings*, from the patient’s mouth. This is achieved by externally accessing the copings retaining screws. It means that the impression copings remain fixed in the impression material. The dentist is then required to add any analogues prior to dispatching it to the laboratory.

Closed tray technique. This requires that the dentist first removes the impression from the patient’s mouth, then unscrews the copings*, which are still attached to the implant. Once out of the mouth, the copings are placed back into the impression. Care must be taken to position them correctly. Any analogues (or replicas), are added prior to despatch.

*See also Impression Copings in Radford Heath's Guide to Implant Parts.
