Alphabetical List of Terms

  • Anatomy of Teeth. For general terms try www.simplyteeth.com or this Wiki link on Tooth Development. More advanced terms might better be researched using a specialist book such as a Dental Dictionary.

  • Bruxist or Bruxism. Oxford Dictionary quotation: "Bruxism, the involuntary or habitual grinding or clenching of the teeth."

  • CAT. Computerized Axial Tomography (or C. T. Scan). Wiki description here.

  • Chroma, (re: Shade Determination). "The saturation (strength, intensity, or vividness) of a colour." "It is sometimes referred to as the purity of the colour". [Reference source: Vita-Zahnfabrik].

  • CIELAB. CIE L*a*b colour space. (Commission Internationale d’Eclairage) The shade guides Vita produce are based around this standard and CIE LCh (for Value, Chroma and hue). Read more here from Vita-Zahnfabrik.

  • Coping. The manufactured inner core (base or substructure) of a dental crown. Made from ceramic, metal alloy, or titanium. Subsequent layers of porcelain are applied over the coping to create a crown.

  • Cusp. Oxford Dictionary quotation: "A cone-shaped prominence on the surface of a tooth, esp. of a molar or premolar.".

  • DAMAS (Dental Appliance Manufacturing Audit Scheme). For more info. refer to DLA (Org) .

  • Dentin-Enamel Junction (DEJ). Merriam-Webster dictionary quote "The dental-enamel junction, abbreviated DEJ, is the boundary between the enamel and the underlying dentin that form the solid architecture of a tooth.".

  • Denture. Oxford Dictionary quotation: "A removable artificial replacement for one or more teeth carried on a removable plate or frame." For more general terms try www.simplyteeth.com.

  • DICOM. (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine). The international standard format for transferring medical images. Wiki description here.

  • Die. Oxford Dictionary quotation: "A device for moulding material into a particular shape". Further information: Die-casting is the process of casting dies from moulds.

  • Dolder®. "A registered trademark in accordance with Prof. Dr. Eugen Dolder, formerly at Dental Institute of the University of Zurich ". Associated with the unique Dolder bar attachment system.   • D.P.T. Dental Panoramic Tomography. It is also known as "OPG" - Orthopantomograph® which is a brand name for the equipment that was first introduced in 1961 by G. E. A DPT x-ray is a full extra oral panoramic x-ray (or radiograph) of the jaw.

  • Endodontics (Endo.). Merriam-Webster dictionary quote: "A branch of dentistry concerned with diseases of the pulp." Wiki description here.

  • Fissure. Oxford Dictionary quotation: "An opening, usually long and narrow, made esp. by cracking, splitting, or separation of parts. "

  • Gingival. Oxford Dictionary quotation: "Of or relating to the gums. "

  • Hader. "In 1973, Helmut Hader, master technician and dental manufacturer, developed a unique attachment system that even today is mainly known in the USA as Hader Bar and Hader Vertical."   • Hue, (re: Shade Determination). "What we commonly call the base or spectral colour (red, yellow, green, blue or some other colour)", or colour shift between primary colours as defined by the Commission Internationale d’Eclairage, C.I.E., colour space.  [Reference source: Vita-Zahnfabrik].

  • Investing, or Investment. "A technique used when casting metals.  Wiki description here.

  • Line Pairs per Millimetre (lp/mm). "This is a measure of resolution, which refers to pairs of lines pressed tighter and tighter together until they eventually merge into a single line. The more lines that can be pressed into a millimetre and still be seen as individual lines, the higher the resolution. Digital radiography sensors can acquire images ranging from 8 to 20 lp/mm.   • Luting. Adhesive cementation of etchable ceramic, and composite restorations, to tooth substance.

  • Periodontics (Perio.). Oxford dictionary quote: "A branch of dentistry concerned with the structures surrounding and supporting the teeth." Wiki description here.

  • Refractory Die. Oxford Dictionary quotation: "A substance especially resistant to heat". Also see term "Die".

  • TMJ. The Temporo-Mandibular Joint. The "hinge" of the jaw.

  • Value, (re: Shade Determination). "The luminance of the colour, i.e. Brightness. It is the lightness or darkness of a colour, relative to a series of grey's ranging from white (L = 100), to black (L = 0)". [Reference source: Vita-Zahnfabrik].
